Extech Introduces Compact UV510 Ultraviolet-A Light Meter

This week, Extech Instruments announced the launch of the UV510 meter designed to measure ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the UVA range in industrial process applications, UV commercial offset printing, archival preservation and occupational exposure among outdoor workers.

The robust pocket-sized UV510 meter features a backlit dual display showing readings as well as the selected range. The meter’s sensor wavelength spectrum spans from 320 to 390nm with cosine correction. The UV510 measures the intensity of ultraviolet radiation in milliwatts per square centimeter (mW/cm2) -- the energy per square centimeter received per second -- in two ranges (0 to 1.999mW/cm², 2 to 20.00mW/cm²) with high resolution down to 0.001mW/cm².

Sunlight exposure can be measured using the UV510 in settings including museums or archives where UVA exposure can fade or damage artwork, texts, files or fragile artifacts. Product development technicians can test for colorfastness or “artificial weathering” from UVA exposure using the UV510. Periodic monitoring of sunlight levels can also be performed for outdoor workers at risk of excessive UV exposure, including construction workers, contractors and surveyors, agriculture, forestry, landscaping and fishing workers.

Useful data functions include data hold, as well as minimum and maximum readings. A zero function allows the user to quickly reset the meter to zero. The Auto-Power-Off function preserves battery life and can be disabled when needed for extended monitoring. A wrist strap is useful for toting while a tripod mount lets users set up the meter with consistent placement to avoid variability in routine measurements (using an optional tripod, TR100).

The new UV510 is backed by a one-year warranty and comes with three AAA batteries.
